Big Ink from Eagan, MN, a signage and tradeshow printer, is in the forefront of eco-friendly printing, setting an example for their clients and competition. Many companies say they want to go green, but Big Ink actually formed a Green Team to tackle the endeavor. Some of their accomplishments include the Zero-Waste Recycling Program in which they take back anything they produce and recycle it. This includes a lot of trade show graphics which are used for a short time and then typically thrown out. They now recycle over 2400 pounds of scrap waste each month along with 600 pounds of office paper.
By teaming up with a local recycler, Big Ink now even recycles PVC, polystyrene, acrylics, and aluminum.
The PVC is reused for plumbing pipe and outdoor furniture, while polystyrene is reused in commercial landscaping and nurseries.
Big Ink recommends the following ECO formula: Engineer to use, Counsel your customers, and Open mindedness. This mentally can be spread across a number of fields, not just in printing. But specifically for printing, some of the things to consider are:
-Print double sided
-Design Artwork to be timeless
-Use Alternatives to solvent based inks
-Reuse packing material
